New Balance Hierro 6 Women
Big G Says…
This is a really cool looking shoe - a considerable improvement in cosmetic appeal on most previous New Balance trail shoes. Thankfully the technical aspects match the visual appearance. This version of the Hierro is the closest yet to the well-loved 'Leadville'. Although some 25g lighter than the v5, it is certainly not recommended for mountain goats. It is one of the more substantial shoes in our range, translating into a solid, reliable partner for tough conditions
Outsole: the Vibram Megagrip rubber is top-rated for grip and durability and is also found on other top-end trail shoes e g Hoka Speedgoat. The waffle pattern is best on hard compacted ground and is OK on tar surfaces too. No change from the v5 here.
Midsole: N.B.'s top cushioning material, Fresh Foam X is again used in this version. Outstanding cushioning and energy return. So again no change from the v5.
Upper: here are the up-grades and the reasons for the weight reduction. The new lighter but resilient and breathable ripstop material is both comfortable and secure. The gusseted tongue and padded heel collar are well padded with a better toe cap too. The most important up-grade however are the TPU protective layers in the high wear areas on both sides of the shoes. Both men's and women's models come only in the wide fitting - ideal for those who have struggled to find wide enough trail shoes before.
Cushioned, supportive, stable, comfortable - this model ticks most of the boxes. This is New Balance's flagship trail shoe and sets the benchmark in the stable and durable trail shoe category. It is designed to go the distance and would also make an excellent hiking shoe.
