Big G Says…

A quote from Brian Metzler (US top running shoe reviewer) sums it up - 'has a few subtle but significant updates that make it slightly better than its predecessor'... the Speedgoat 3.

Like previous versions, it floats over the ground with outstanding underfoot protection from rocks and roots. Perfect for aggressive rocky technical trails as the outsole is both grippy on the up-hills and very secure on the down-hills. Two main features contribute to this excellent traction. Firstly, the stepped lugs which have been increased to 5mm and the slightly tweaked lug pattern. Secondly, Hoka uses the more expensive Vibram MegaGrip rubber which specifically adds traction especially on wet and slippery conditions. This outsole is one of the most durable for tough terrain.

Hoka claim that the midsole material is lighter and more responsive than the '3' but in practice it feels firmer and more stable. There is no need for a rockplate as the denser, thicker midsole is sufficient to isolate the foot from any danger. The new mesh upper is more durable and will hold just great in the toughest rocky terrain. The toe box has a slightly more accommodating fit but the big news is that it now comes in a wider width. This will allow a more comfortable fit from heel to toe than the previous versions which were prone to be on the narrow size especially when wearing thicker trail socks.

So Hoka claim that the '4' is superior to the '3' ... maybe it is but The Ginger Runner is not convinced. Hardly any difference in his opinion. Maybe a '3' at a lower clearance price might be a better buy if still available.
