Asics Cumulus 22 Men
Big G Says…
The long awaited overhaul of the Cumulus has still not arrived. This will please many Asics devotees who like continuity from year to year...and this model is obviously still a member of the old guard, evident as soon as you open the box. lt is, and always has been a standard, no frills neutral shoe - reliable, durable and suitable for a wide variety of runners from novices to marathon enthusiasts.
Some reviewers will point out all the minor upgrades, but most of them are cosmetic and have no real influence on the way the shoe performs compared to the Cumulus 21. The upper materials have been up-graded, giving it a cleaner look but nothing dramatic. The midsole is still a pleasant balance of Flytefoam cushioning (not too soft or too firm) with the 2 gel implants at the heel strike area and the forefoot as usual. The rearfoot gel unit is slightly larger in this version. Some reviewers say the 22 has a softer underfoot feel. Well they must have very sensitive feet to pick up any significant difference. An increased number of flex grooves in the forefoot improves the flexibility. The solid outsole is certainly more durable than some of its competitors, but this makes it not as flexible as others...all things considered, it can be classified as stable neutral.
In summary, it is a straight forward comfortable traditional fitting neutral running shoe that only comes in a standard width. It will be interesting to see if this Asics model can retain its popularity. It will be a popular choice for those Asics runners who fear that too much change may endanger their health...but there are many challengers to take it on in this highly competitive category.
