Big G Says…

We stock 3 models of Altra trail shoes and while each of them has their individual character, they all have the same Altra fingerprint... zero drop and the unique footscape allowing extra toe splay. Established in 2009, Altra has built a fan base amongst trail runners (especially ultra). The Timp has been one of the most popular models, but even so, Altra has made a few upgrades to the 1.5. The fit is quite a bit snugger with both the width and the toe box height reduced a little. The new multi-directional mesh allows a perfect fit and the shoe feels sleeker, but still with plenty of room for toe splay. The rearfoot rudder has gone but there is a protective reinforced toe cap - so essential for many.

The new Quantic midsole material, also used in the Torin 4, provides plush but durable cushioning. Together with improved flexibility, the 19gram drop in weight of the Timp 2.0 achieves a faster feeling ride. The cushioning is so good that it could be described as a hybrid door- to-trail shoe. The 29mm stack height certainly eliminates the need for a rock plate. The lugs on the MaxTrac outsole are now more aggressive so should grip better on softer surfaces, but the perception is that it performs better on firmer trails.

There are a lot of similarities with the Lone Peak 4.5. The Timp 2.0 is now lighter than the Lone Peak 4.5 and boosts a more lively and durable midsole. The Lone Peak is probably a more nimble shoe and certainly has a more generous toe splay forefoot. Both models stand up well to some serious wear and tear.
