New Balance Tempo Men
Big G Says…
This totally new shoe from New Balance is part of the Fresh Foam X (FFX) line of popular models which include the 1080 and 880. It falls into the 'lightweight performance trainer' category - light and fast enough to excel for shorter distance training runs and races but with enough cushioning and support for up to 21 kms without having to use one of New Balance's more traditional cushioned shoes for everyday training. So it's the kind of shoe that floats between a daily trainer and a racer.
The Hypoknit upper immediately gives the sensation of being comfortable. No pressure points to irritate but the breathable mesh is reinforced on both medial and lateral sides for improved lockdown and works with the TPU external heel counter which provides a really good heel lock. The cosmetics are even somewhat funky and modern - not something that NB has been known for in the past.
The FFX foam gives a firm, solid and stable feel on the road. The 6mm heel/toe drop encourages a smooth ride balancing the cushioning with a comfortable and fast transition efficiency. The outsole has a blown rubber forefoot for extra cushioning and grip with a more durable rubber at the rearfoot.
So for a relatively inexpensive medium stack height shoe, the Tempo ticks a lot of boxes. lt is light, comfortable, secure and stable with a smooth transition - perfect for those who do not crave running ultra distances...and not to forget that with its excellent flexibility and forefoot traction, it can be recommended as an ideal treadmill workout shoe.
